STEAMLabs is a non-profit community makerspace, where people of all ages and abilities come together for access to high tech tools, to learn, and to create. It’s a place where Science, Technology Engineering, Art and Math can all be used to invent the future; a place where your imagination can come to play!
Located in the heart of Toronto at 192 Spadina avenue at Queen, STEAMLabs anchors the ground floor of the new 64,000 square foot headquarters of the Centre for Social Innovation.
The STEAMLabs makerspace is an entry point for both kids and adults looking to get started in digital fabrication, coding, hands-on making and electronics. It’s also a space for seasoned makers, entrepreneurs and artists looking to work with serious tools needed to get things done. We offer full access memberships as well as stand-alone after school programs, weekend workshops and plenty of drop-in open make times.
Andy Forest and Marianne Mader founded a kids non-profit makerspace together in 2012. Thousands of kids aged 8 to 12 used real tools to make amazing projects like soapbox racecars, boats, and robotic nerf guns. They had lots of fun, and they gained essential skills like problem solving and tech literacy. The name of this not-for-profit was changed to STEAMLabs in 2015.
When kids are empowered to be makers, amazing things happen in their lives. By being creators instead of just consumers, they are learning to be the innovators of the future, today. Their confidence in their own abilities allows them to make the change they want to see in the world.
STEAMLabs expands on Andy and Marianne’s original vision to include older youth and adults. In addition to tech skills, STEAMLabs tailors its programs to enhance soft skills – confidence, entrepreneurship, teamwork, collaboration, resourcefulness and more. We help youth and adults understand themselves and enhance their skills in all areas!
To address this in the best way possible, STEAMLabs is partnering with the Centre for Social Innovation. Their mission statement says it best:
The Centre for Social Innovation is a social enterprise with a mission to catalyze social innovation in Toronto and around the world. We believe that society is facing unprecedented economic, environmental, social and cultural challenges. We also believe that new innovations are the key to turning these challenges into opportunities to improve our communities and our planet.
